In a previous article, we wrote about how a pyramid workholding setup can unleash the productivity of 5-axis machining centers by allowing multiple parts to be clamped in a single setup while giving full access to all sides of each and every part. Good stuff indeed.
But the right 5-axis pyramid brings even more benefits, including quick changeovers, enhanced repeatability, and improved versatility and flexibility.
Turns out you don’t have to book a ticket to Egypt to see a Great Pyramid. All you have to do is know the right people in Rockford, Illinois.
AMROK Grid Performance, Now in Pyramid Form
Popular on tombstones, grid plates, and fixture plates, the AMROK grid is a precision, alphanumeric 2” pattern that is designed to work with any compatible workholding system. This includes our own AMROK workholding components and systems, as well as solutions from our partners like Schunk, Triag, 5th Axis Vises, Vektek, and Mitee-Bite. The amazing versatility of the AMROK pyramid brings a high level of flexibility and standardization to 5-axis machining applications.
The quick-change capability, repeatability, and versatility of a grid system streamline the setup and changeover process, reducing downtime and increasing overall productivity. And while any grid system can offer the quick changeover of workholding fixtures, the accurate spacing and consistency of the AMROK grid system ensure that workpieces and fixtures can be mounted in the same position every time, providing excellent repeatability and reducing the time needed for custom alignment or positioning.
AMROK pyramids are offered in three configurations:
- 3-sided pyramid with a 20° face angle
- 3-sided pyramid with a 45° face angle
- 4-sided pyramid with a 30° face angle
Each pyramid features hardened, threaded inserts that allow for clamping in every hole while offering quick and easy replaceability. Hardened, precision bushings are accurately located to ensure easy locating as well as high wear resistance.
Integrated Tooling Ball for Precise and Speedy Setups
AMROK pyramids feature an integrated tooling ball: a precision machined sphere mounted on a shaft, that serves as a reference point for establishing positions accurately. Using a tooling ball to locate the pyramid on your machine ensures accuracy, repeatability, and compatibility, all while saving time compared to alternative methods.
It’s easy to locate the AMROK pyramid using a tooling ball. Here’s how:
- Mount the tooling ball on the pyramid: Attach the tooling ball to a known location on the pyramid fixture, ensuring that it is secure and properly aligned.
- Install the probe: Install a touch probe in your machine's spindle, ensuring that it is properly calibrated and functioning correctly.
- Measure the tooling ball: Move the probe to touch the tooling ball at several points around its circumference, recording the coordinates at each point. Typically, at least three points are measured, but more points can be used for higher accuracy.
- Calculate the center of the tooling ball: Use the measured coordinates to calculate the center of the tooling ball, which represents the reference point of the pyramid. This can be done using software or manually through mathematical calculations.
- Update the machine's coordinate system: Input the calculated center coordinates of the tooling ball into the machine's control system, establishing the reference point of the pyramid in the machine's coordinate system.
Standardization and Flexibility For the Win
Seasoned operators can confirm that 5-axis machining jobs and workpieces can vary widely. Without proper planning, this can lead to increased workholding costs, longer lead times, and increased setup headaches.
The AMROK pyramid and its precision grid system promotes the use of standardized components and procedures across your operation, simplifying inventory management and reducing the need for custom workholding. It’s a flexible foundation that can be easily adapted or expanded to accommodate new workpieces, machining operations, or equipment as your business evolves.
At AME, we are here to guide you at every step of selecting the best AMROK pyramid and 5-axis workholding system for your applications.
