Rockford, Illinois, USA - September 21, 2018 - Earlier today, Democratic Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (@RepCheri) visited Advanced Machine & Engineering to learn more about the family business and CNC machining. She also discussed some of the challenges of the manufacturing skills gap in the United States.

During her visit, she toured the new facility expansion with President/CEO, Dietmar Goellner and Chief Operating Officer, Steve Schubert. She also worked as a machine operator and received hands-on experience with CNC machining as she helped load parts into AME’s Mazak INTEGREX machine during the morning shift.

Goellner explained one of AME’s main obstacles is the manufacturing skills gap. “We have jobs available, but we are having a hard time finding the right skilled workers and the younger generation doesn’t seem interested in manufacturing as a career.”

Congresswoman Bustos agreed, stating the younger generation typically does not gravitate towards manufacturing. Congresswoman Bustos and Goellner reviewed ways to address the gap so that local companies can continue to bring more good paying jobs into the Rockford community and surrounding areas.Cheri BUstos Dietmar Goellner

“I had a great time job-shadowing a worker at Advanced Machine & Engineering today” she said. "If we want to strengthen American manufacturing and create more good-paying jobs for hardworking men and women, we need to continue providing funding for workforce training programs and ensure we have a trade policy that makes sense. I always appreciate the opportunity to listen to our region's workers and job creators about the issues they face and I look forward to seeing what AME continues to do in our community."
